- Rest at home (not necessarily in bed) for 24 hours following anesthesia. You may feel sleepy during this time.
- These post-operative instructions include, but are not limited to, the following: Do not make any legal or financial decisions, drive any motorized vehicles, operate any power tools, or operate gas, electric, or microwave oven or stove.
- Occasionally during the first several hours following surgery you may feel like you have a fever or your skin may feel warm and sweaty.
- You may have light foods at home. Broth-based soups and liquids are preferable. PLEASE AVOID heavy, spicy or greasy foods. Advance to regular diet as tolerated. DO NOT drink any alcoholic beverages.
- Call your Doctor if your temperature is 101 or higher, or if you have difficultly in breathing or have persistent nausea and vomiting.
- Call your Doctor if you see excessive bleeding from your incision site.
- If your Doctor did not prescribe pain medication, you may take your usual non-prescribed pain medication. If your pain is not relieved, call you Doctor.
- We recommend a responsible adult be with you 24 hours following surgery.
- Following general anesthesia, avoid smoking for 24 hours.
- If you have had a regional anesthesia including a spinal or arm or leg block, your arm or legs may be numb or insensitive to pain or temperature for 24 hours.
- Call your Doctor if you are unable to urinate after 3 or 4 hours or if you have a catheter in your bladder and there is no drainage after 2-3 hours.
- Please follow pre-printed post-operative instructions given by your Dr. and/or nurse.
